A&R Brownlie's enduring success owes much to the foresight and business acumen of its original founders, brothers Alexander and Robert Brownlie, who took over their uncle's small timber business in Carluke in 1848. When the railways made it possible to source timber from previously remote areas the prospect of timber from the Earl of Haddington's estate at Mellerstain brought the brothers to the village of Earlston in 1858.
